The four columns
- Income: take-home pay and any other regular money in.
- Fixed costs: rent, utilities, phone, insurance premiums, minimum payments.
- Flexible costs: food, transport, personal spending.
- Saving: whatever you set aside.
Fill it from records
Use the last two or three months of bank statements and receipts. Real numbers make a better budget than guesses.
If it does not balance
Look at flexible costs first. Small changes to several lines often matter more than one big cut.
Keep it honest
A budget is a record you adjust. Revise it whenever income or costs change.
